Equal Earth is a modern equal-area projection designed to show countries and continents at their correct relative sizes.
What is the Equal Earth map?
Equal Earth is a pseudocylindrical equal-area projection introduced by Bojan Šavrič, Tom Patterson, and Bernhard Jenny in 2018.
Why was Equal Earth created?
Its designers combined rigorous equal-area geometry with rounded, visually familiar continent shapes suitable for general-purpose world maps.
How is it different from Mercator?
Mercator preserves local angles but greatly increases scale toward the poles. Equal Earth preserves relative area instead.
Does Equal Earth show true country sizes?
It preserves relative area across the map. Shape, distance, and direction still contain distortion because no flat map can preserve every property of a sphere.
Primary sources and method
Map geometry uses Natural Earth 1:110m boundaries. Projection math uses D3’s spherical implementations. Area values are rounded and may vary slightly with coastline, inland-water, and boundary conventions.
